  1. Yup, my realm's on the list.

Don't tell me you can't handle one full day way from WoW. :P

  2. LOL!

It's not that... it's that we're 5 years (going on 6...) into this game, and they still haven't figured out how to avoid taking away 6-12 hours of uptime every week, or how to release patches/expansions without something like this.

I understand, sometimes in this industry they just have to bite the bullet and do stuff, but this is ridiculous, especially a week after they had us offline for well over 12 hours of a maintenance window that had to run long.

At least we got warning this time...

  3. Well, I look at the game as something dynamic... just like all things on computers. So, having to go through constant changes, meet various demands, etc all on the software side. Then event possible hardware issue. Hell. Normal server maintenance could be something as simple as a reboot, but longer than your average PC.

So, because I think it's a dynamic situation, I'll use a car as an analogy. I take my car in for regular maintenance every 3 months. I get my WoW maintained once a week. If that's what it takes to make it run smoothly, then that's what it takes. Now, every so often, you might need to change your brakes on your car. But it needs a wheel alignment first. So this 24 hour downtime is the wheel alignment before the brake change (Cataclysm).

Also, one could argue that the older something gets, the more maintenance it needs. ie: Me. :P

AND FINALLY - yes, I suck at analogies. But hopefully it makes sense to someone out there. :P

  4. I do understand, Regis, and while the weekly maintenance is annoying, it is also at one of the lowest utilization points for the week, and doesn't normally affect me or most of my guildmates.

But I also know what is possible given the proper infrastructure. Blizz certainly has the cash to get there, and could do better.

  5. Could Blizzard do better? Of course.
Bliz could have released Starcraft 2, earlier as well. Or Diablo 3. So on, and so forth.

Anything and everything could be "better". I could do my job better (ie: not type up this response from work. ;) ). You could possibly do your job better, too. No, I'm not saying you or I are doing a BAD job. But we could probably be doing better.

I'm left unphased by this because, just as you know what's possible given the proper infastruction, I also know that it's within Bliz's best interests to have things run as smoothly as possible. That doesn't mean it's going to be without bumps, such as today, but if it means release day will be a more fluid transition - well, I'm all for it.

  6. Oh, I'd far rather take a day off now than have the release day go terribly.

I'd rather they not take a whole day off at all, too, which is all that I was really frustrated with to begin with, and is not too far fetched for a company like Blizzard to achieve. Knowing Blizzard's history, maybe it is too far fetched for Blizzard to achieve, (I'm impressed whenever Blizzard actually RELEASES a new game...) but it is something that is not outside the realm of their capabilities.

Of course, I also realize I'm being a little dumb, because I'm not a Blizzard employee and have no real clue how they have everything set up. Still...

Unfortunately, it's not quite annoying enough to me (or anyone else for that matter) to do anything more than complain about it on the Internet, which means it won't affect Blizz's bottom line, which means there is no real incentive for them to spend the time/cash/etc to make it better. Too them, it is apparently already "good enough." Which is why I'm going to rant about it every now and again, even if it is a little silly. ;)

  7. I don't blame ya for the ranting. I'm trolling YOUR blog, you can do what YOU want. :)

I'm just trying to be positive about it, even though the GF and I are a little lost as what we're going to do after work. "lol wut? Groshureez?" :)

So, yeah, I basically that they should probably have it figured out by now, but at the same time trying to be positive about it, with the big bold hope that things won't go to shit when Cata hits. The WOTLK release was smoother than BC (Lagfire Peninsula, anyone?), and I can only hope that Cata is even a better transition than WOTLK.

But now that you mention it... wouldn't maybe 2 x 12 hour downtimes be better than 1 x 24 hrs? /shrug
